WEEKLY WRAP: HRC in Southeast Asia

In Vietnam, wider-width Q235 offers from China dipped to $470-$472/mt CFR Vietnam, down $21/mt week over week, with most offers for prompt shipment. Buying ideas were reported at $2/mt below offer levels.

A Vietnam-based trader said that buyers in North Vietnam were showing interest in wider-width coils, particularly after offer levels dipped, provided the cargoes would arrive in December.

“They’re banking on no temporary measures being imposed before year-end — perhaps only after the festive period but before the Lunar New Year holiday,” the trader said.

In the SAE1006 segment, offers for Indian 30% 2mm-thick coils held steady at $495/mt CFR Vietnam. Japanese coils were offered at $515/mt CFR Vietnam, while

Malaysian coils were offered at $519/mt CFR. Offers for Indonesian 3mm-thick coils were heard at $500/mt CFR Vietnam, but tradable levels were reported at $480/mt FOB Morowali, or around $495/mt CFR Vietnam.

Vietnam-based traders said interest in imports was stifled by fresh offers from Vietnam’s Formosa Ha Tinh Steel, which stood at $510-$520/mt CIF domestic ports and were deemed to be competitive to local buyers.

Platts assessed SAE1006 HRC at $467/mt FOB China on Nov. 7, down $1/mt week over week. The same grade of coil was down $1/mt over the same period at $494/mt CFR Southeast Asia.
